THE FROMENTIÈRES ALTARPIECE
description
The church of Fromentières, erected for the most part in the 15th century and dedicated to St Mary Magdalene, houses a remarkable work of art: a 16th century Flemish altarpiece in sculpted and painted hardwood, in the flamboyant Gothic style. Made in Antwerp, it is from the Nuremberg school.
One hundred and fifty figures in gilded and polychrome wood bring Christ to life, from his birth to the Passion.
The richness and expressive beauty of this altarpiece are unique in the region.
