Along the water
description
Esternay has been inhabited since antiquity, as evidenced by the excavations undertaken during the construction of the national road 4.
It is believed that the first fort was built under Julius Caesar, to maintain the submission of the peoples of the region and monitor the Roman road that passed through Tréfols. This fortress was built in the middle of the marshes which made it impenetrable, hence its name Starnacum (lower place).
Today, the town offers its 1900 inhabitants a pleasant living environment. With a college, shops and local services, it also has a very varied range of leisure activities.
Discover with us the history of this town with its rural charm, whose life revolves around what was essential to its creation: the waterways.
