"Mails"

The town of Sezanne is surrounded by "mails (pronounce "my")...But where does that name come from ? Mails are flat grounds, most of the time edged with trees ; they were used to play the game of maillet (a kind of game of croquet). That is how people came to the name "mail". [read more]

Claude François painted magnificent pictures telling about the life of Saint François of Assise. They are displayed at the Cloister in Sézanne... Rather surprising thing : Claude François is the true name of Frère Luc, a seventeenth century’s Recollet monk and painter. [read more]

Peat Bogs

Peat bogs are special wet areas. Those surroundings are always under water ; vegetal fragments pile up over the years and built a deposit of peat which gets thicker and thicker. Peat used to be used as fuel material. [read more]

Picasso

You can admire a Picasso in the Marne while strolling on board of a fifties’ rail carriage... This machine was so called because of its special features but also because the driver stands on the left, not in the middle... A tribute to the Master’s style... [read more]

Saint Fiacre

Saint Fiacre, patron saint of gardeners, was an Irish monk who came to the region of Meaux to live as an ermit. As his goodness was attracting a lot of poor people, Bishop Faron allowed him to keep the surface he would be able to surround with a ditch dug in one day with his spade. The miracle happened and the spade, by itself, surrounded a large enclosure. The Castle of Montmort

The Castle of Montmort is of a real interest, not only through its architecture which makes it look so incredible that it seems to be coming out of a tale, but also through the women who played a very important part in its history. Two ladies - Jeanne Des Noyers and Jeanne D’Hangest - had this castle built on the ruins of an old fortress. [read more]

The castle and its guests... The Castle of Reveillon can be proud of having welcomed Marcel Proust who was inspired by the landlord and wrote « Les plaisirs et les jours ».
